Restoring Dignity & Control After An Injury

Tips for using a ladder safely

On Behalf of | Mar 18, 2025 | Work-Related Injuries |

For construction workers, falls are the leading cause of fatal accidents. They are one of the greatest dangers that workers face on the job.

However, many workers must use ladders, scaffolding systems and other devices to work at heights. There is no way to entirely avoid this risk because it is simply part of the profession. As such, they need to know how to use ladders safely and lower the odds of a fall.

Key tips to keep in mind

To help, here are some important tips that workers should follow every time they climb a ladder or work at heights:

  • Only one worker should climb the ladder at a time.
  • Workers should never climb the back of the ladder, only the front rungs.
  • Generally, workers should not climb to the top rungs of the ladder but should stay slightly lower to have hand support.
  • A worker ascending or descending the ladder should always strive to maintain three points of contact.
  • If something is out of reach from the top of the ladder, the worker should never attempt to “walk” it to the side or lean dangerously from the top.
  • It is important for workers to choose the correct type of ladder for the job, as an extension ladder has a much different application than a step ladder.
  • Workers should consider external hazards, such as slick surfaces, overhead power lines or weather conditions.

These tips can help workers focus on safety, but accidents can still happen. Those who are injured in falls on the job need to know what legal options they have to seek proper workers’ compensation benefits that can cover their lost wages, medical bills and other costs.
