Restoring Dignity & Control After An Injury

Workplace hazards for healthcare employees

On Behalf of | Sep 28, 2022 | Work-Related Injuries |

Workplace injuries are a common occurrence in many industries, and healthcare workers are no exception. They are at a higher risk for certain types of injuries than employees in other fields, primarily due to the nature of their work.

How do these injuries occur, and what can you do if you’re injured at work?

3 major hazards in medical facilities for workers

Healthcare workers are at a higher risk for workplace injuries than workers in other industries. The most common types of workplace injuries for healthcare workers include the following:

  1. Needlesticks occur when a used needle accidentally sticks a healthcare worker. They are a serious concern in healthcare, as they can lead to the transmission of bloodborne illnesses such as HIV and hepatitis.
  2. Back injuries frequently happen because healthcare workers often need to lift and move patients. They can also occur when healthcare workers twist or bend awkwardly or pull or push heavy objects. In addition, many healthcare workers stand for long periods, which can put additional strain on the back.
  3. Slips, trips, and falls can occur anywhere, from the parking lot to the patient’s room. They are often caused by wet or uneven surfaces, cluttered walkways, poor lighting, or loose cords and wires.

Work-related injuries can be both painful and costly. If you’re injured on the job, there are a few steps you should take:

  • Report the incident to your employer as soon as possible.
  • Seek medical attention, even if you don’t think the injury is serious.
  • Follow the physician’s instructions for treatment and recovery.
  • Be sure to keep detailed records of all expenses related to the injury, including medical bills, lost wages, and travel costs.

You should file a workers’ compensation claim to cover your medical expenses and any lost wages. If your claim isn’t going as well as you expect, it may be time to seek legal guidance.
