Motor vehicle accidents: When to suspect brain injury

Many Illinois travelers will be involved in collisions before this year ends. Issues that cause motor vehicle accidents vary; however, many collisions are caused by driver negligence. The sudden impact of a crash occurs under such force that severe or, even, fatal injuries might occur, especially injuries to the brain.

Traumatic brain injuries are not always immediately apparent. Symptoms may be subtle or late-developing. Close observation is necessary for all accident victims, especially those who remember hitting their heads upon impact. In fact, if a brain injury is suspected, hospital officials will often keep accident victims there overnight to watch for signs of a worsening condition.

The most common traumatic brain injury symptoms include head pain, facial or jaw pain, difficulty speaking, dizziness, nausea, eye pupils that are unequal in dilation, and confusion or mood swings. Even if it has been several days since an accident occurred, such symptoms would definitely warrant further medical examination. It is always a good idea to make sure the attending physician knows that the person in question was recently in a car accident.

Motor vehicle accidents that result in injury can be devastating to the lives of Illinois residents and others, especially those that end in fatalities. The financial strain such incidents often place upon families can be stressful, as well. This is why the state allows accident victims or family members of deceased victims to seek financial recovery for their losses when another person's negligence was deemed a causal factor in a collision.
