Restoring Dignity & Control After An Injury

Safety Stocking Stuffers

On Behalf of | Jan 3, 2011 | Chicago, Safety |

This holiday, no doubt you plan to fill your stockings with candy, toys and fruit. But somewhere in between the tiny bottles of bubble bath or peanut butter filled chocolates, tuck in some truly useful auto safety tools to help keep you and your loved ones safe this season and next.

A great gift that will last all year long is a membership to an auto club, such as AAA. For immediate family members, it can be as easy and inexpensive as adding them to your own membership. Coverage generally includes towing, jumpstarts, tire & gas service, and locksmith assistance. The great thing about AAA memberships is that the member is covered regardless of the car in which they are riding. So if, for instance, you college-age child carpools back to university after holiday break in a friend’s car, they won’t be stranded in the event of a breakdown or accident. He or she can still use their AAA account for help getting back on the road.

In addition to an auto club membership, there are other auto safety tools that make good gifts. Give a can of Fix-a-Flat, which a person can use in the event of a tire leak. Connect the can to your tire hose when you experience a flat or nearly flat tire, and it will inflate and repair the tire long enough to get it to the nearest tire repair shop or to a safe location to change the tire. Every auto should also have a flashlight. A flashlight can make it possible to change a flat tire in the dark, to alert passing motorists, or simply help a person find their way between the car and a building in a dark area. Make it a wind-up flashlight, and you never have to worry about replacing batteries.

Despite our best intentions, accidents still happen. And at times, people become trapped in unsafe conditions in those vehicles due to jammed seatbelts or an inability to open a door. Therefore, include among your stocking stuffers a combination emergency window punch and seatbelt cutter. You can also “gift” your family with tools for after an accident. In the aftermath of an accident, especially when you are not at fault, you often need help. Provide your family, therefore, with a contact card which includes a list of emergency contacts. Among that list include family numbers, physician and insurance numbers, and the contact information for an Illinois personal injury attorney.

Hope your holidays are happy and safe!
